Who invented recursion?

Who came up with the notion of algorithmic recursion: a philosopher or a mathematician? Whoever that was, he (I presume :-) ) deserves a monument.

He invented the algorithm, but, AFAIK, has not formulated the notion. If he has, the word for recursion would have been Greek.

I think the credit goes to Stephen Cole Kleene.

Ummm... it looks like he also invented regular expressions.

Thanks; and the monument is fitting. To tell the truth, I have not heard of him before, despite the fact that he is credited with inventing regular expressions. I used to associate regular expressions with Backus.
